NATO marks 30 Years of artillery fire control software collaboration at historic Picatinny Arsenal gathering
PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - Ballistics experts, defense software engineers, and military delegates representing 22 Allied, partner, and non-partner nations gathered at Picatinny Arsenal this past week for the 40th bi-annual program review of the https://safe.menlosecurity.com/doc/docview/viewer/docN1BD34A523A1F37cbd76f011e878881464d17e52406e89696c3bce642d66eff75435daafc3391.
The landmark session marks three decades of continuous multinational cooperation dedicated to developing and maintaining the common software baseline that powers allied artillery and technical fire control systems worldwide.
Convened under the auspices of the NATO Army Armaments Group (NAAG) Allied Committee/225 Integrated Capability Group Indirect Fire (ICGIF), the Sub-Group 2 (SG/2) Panel serves as the alliance’s primary authority on trajectory modeling, ballistics, and fire control software standards for indirect fire systems.
Hosted locally by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center, the conference brought together international stakeholders to review software baselines, assess software audits, and approve technical roadmaps for coalition fire control software.
The S4 cooperative software development and maintenance model was established to eliminate costly duplication of engineering efforts among member nations while improving digital interoperability on the joint battlefield. Throughout the eight-day assembly at Picatinny, working groups addressed key technical milestones required to sustain the ten primary software products with hundreds of fielded implementations across the coalition.
By deploying shared, standardized mathematical algorithms rather than divergent national solutions, allied artillery units can better execute combined fire missions, share common fire mission data, and generate accurate firing solutions regardless of host platform.
The 22 participating nations at Picatinny reviewed the progress of enhancements across the entire software development lifecycle, verifying that every component complies with NATO Standardization Agreements (STANAGs) and related Allied Publications (APs).
The meeting was the 14th time since February 2009 that the delegation organized collectively on Picatinny Arsenal.
“The selection of Picatinny Arsenal for this 40th bi-annual review reflects the installation’s enduring role as the technical heartbeat of U.S. Army armament software,” said Fareed Choudhury, Senior Scientific Technical Managers for the Armaments Center’s Fire Control Systems and Technology Directorate.
Chris Grassano, Armaments Center Director, briefed the panel with an overview of the organization’s mission, and answered questions from allied partners during the panel’s fourth day in session. Operating as the U.S. Army's primary research and development facility for armaments and munitions, the Armaments Center is a critical hub for joint-service lethality.
The DEVCOM Armaments Center’s Weapons and Software Engineering Center (WSEC) and its Firing Tables and Ballistics (FTaB) Division have led and contributed to the NATO SG/2 Panel initiatives since the group's earliest formulations.
Jason Fonner, Chief of the FTaB Division and Chair of SG/2, noted that having the Director of Armaments Center brief the panel demonstrates the continuing importance of the organization’s role in promoting interoperable systems among allied forces and contributing to deterrence.
The first meeting that started this effort was in 1995 at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., on what started out as the NATO Artillery (now Armaments) Ballistic Kernel.
