October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Westminster, MD, Thursday, October 1, 2026 – This morning, during Open Session, the Carroll County Board of Commissioners proclaimed October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month (CSAM). Established in 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an annual global initiative focused on improving online safety for individuals, businesses, and communities.
This year’s theme, “Don’t Make It Easy for Them,” emphasizes how small, everyday habits can make a big difference in keeping cybercriminals out. As threats continue to evolve, accelerated by technologies such as artificial intelligence, simple steps remain the most effective way to reduce risk. National cybersecurity experts emphasize four core actions everyone can take:
Use strong passwords and a password manager
Turn on multifactor authentication
Recognize and report scams
Keep software and devices updated
These daily practices help protect personal information and support safer online habits across our community.
CSAM also highlights the importance of protecting the services our communities rely on, like public safety, water systems, emergency response, and communications. Carroll County Government remains committed to strengthening these essential services and supporting this nationwide initiative led by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the National Cybersecurity Alliance.
