Melissa Alston Selected as Craven County Information Technology Director
Melissa Alston has been selected as Craven County’s Information Technology Director. A native of Rocky Mount, Alston is a seasoned local government technology leader with 25 years of public service experience in North Carolina.
Prior to joining Craven County, Alston spent more than two decades with the City of Rocky Mount, most recently serving as PMO/IT Project Manager, where she led complex technology initiatives and cross-departmental projects. She previously served as Interim Chief Technology Officer, providing executive leadership for the city’s technology operations, cybersecurity, enterprise applications, infrastructure, technology strategy, and an $11 million operating budget. Her career has included roles in finance, customer service, project management, and technology, giving her a broad understanding of local government operations.

Alston holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Liberty University and an associate’s degree from Nash Community College. She is a Local Government Federal Credit Union (LFGCU) Civic Fellow, a leadership program that invests in emerging local government leaders and strengthens the connection between public service professionals and the communities they serve. She also serves as the Chair of the Professional Development Committee for the North Carolina Local Government Information Systems Association (NCLGISA), helping advance professional growth, knowledge-sharing, and leadership development among local government technology professionals across the state.
As Craven County’s IT Director, Alston will focus on strengthening technology and cybersecurity, advancing digital transformation, developing high-performing teams, and building strategic partnerships that position the County for continued growth and innovation.
Alston joined Craven County as Information Technology Director on August 26, 2026.
